They don't call me professor Moriarty for nothing.
They have spoken of the interesting juxtaposition of the Jewish and Chinese cultures, the gentleness of the story, and Buck's decision not to satisfy our need for a Hollywood ending.
All of these wonderful aspects allowed me to focus on other layers of the novel. I had never heard of the migration of Jews to China. It turned out to be that their biggest problem was one that it has always been, and that is in intermarrying with the people around them. There God Jehovah had warned them of this when he set them aside as his own people, starting with Abraham. Buck describes the Chinese characters in this book as being accepting of others while being a bit hedonistic themselves. Their acceptance of and integration into the Chinese culture is portrayed as inexorable. This is just an abridged version of her book, Overcoming Infertility Naturally, which I highly recommend.. There are perhaps moments when it verges on crude; it is a book about profanity, after all. Hmm, wonder why that
