Edgar Degas is best known for his luminous studies of dancers. He captured his young female subjects warming up, practicing at the bar, or mid-performance with a stunning immediacy and accuracy, on canvas, paper, and in bronze. Although Degas did not consider himself part of the Impressionist movement, he is often viewed in that context. This sumptuously illustrated book offers a new framework, establishing Degas as a thoroughly modern artist who was engaged with and influenced by the then-new mediums of photography and film. Using drawings, pastels, paintings, prints, sculpture, photographs taken by the artist and his contemporaries, and samples of film from the period, renowned Degas scholars Richard Kendall and Jill DeVonyar examine the artist’s innovative approach to the subject, from his documentary mode of the early 1870s to the sensuous and expressive manner of his late work.
Jill DeVonyar is an independent curator and former ballet dancer. Richard Kendall is an art historian and an independent curator. They are co-authors of Degas and the Dance, which accompanied a highly popular exhibition.
Although it is possible for the reader to figure out a switch has been made, this is potentially confusing.

Page 46 fails to properly cancel units of feet (describing a pressure in pounds per *cubic* feet instead of pounds per *square* feet. The writing and the characterizations are both excellent. Now I have more choices than I ever thought possible. A great technique that keeps the reader wondering, and driven to continue turning pages.
THE WRITING -- Ms. The seller sent a new copy free of charge to my school address in record time. There are so many aspects of this book that made me fall in love with these two men. Smith is a passable writer with a promising eye (and perhaps a good editor), she would have better served her material, not to mention herself, by taking the relatively pedestrian realities of her life, punching them up with a few dramatic twists and invented characters, to give us the sizzling novel, "The Devil Wears My Art". I lov
