The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.
Lothar Redlin grew up on Vancouver Island, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria, and a Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1978. He subsequently did research and taught at the University of Washington, the University of Waterloo, and California State University, Long Beach. However, this book still has a long way to go before it will be a valuable learning tool for students.
My critique of the first edition noted poor writing quality, confusing math notation, and factual errors. Then, this explanation is followed by an appeal to diaphragm deformation as the cause of nonlinearity, which is absurd given the extremely low restoring force of a rubber diaphragm. Piston actuators are capable of generating more force than diaphragm actuators because they can handle much higher operating pressures (Force = Pressure x Area). Also, the book includes recipes for "no-brainer dishes" like, Deviled Eggs, Creamed Spinach, and Meatloaf that are made so easily with low carbs anyway. Great stuff!. If you want to do it without drugs.. If you want it there is meaning and passion behind L A Witt's words
