I first read this book in 1989. Kate had a horrible childhood (lots of time in the foster system) and I would have like to have delved into that a bit more. The book is so rich and has so many layers, I'm sure I didn't take it all in the first time. 2,600 to be exact. As war between France and Prussia becomes increasingly likely, the need is high for mercury fulminate, an explosive. France has no source.
Baron Harsanyi's wife owns a large cinnabar mine in Idria, but she refuses French and English offers to buy her ore. To an extent David succeeds, presenting Cardigan as a deeply flawed man rather than a raging monster. Good book and the author goes the extra mile. I loved Bran just as much as I loved Jonathan even when he was being an ass, because I could understood WHY he was being an ass. I liked Rachel, who was almost to the point of being too good to be true, most likely she would have to be to put up with and deal with Holden's plethora of problems.
